Class syllabus 2018-19 Mr. Garozzo RM 208
(This syllabus may be subject to change) [email protected]
Hello all!
My name is Mr. Garozzo and I am excited to be your math teacher this year.
Class expectation:
I have high expectations for all my students and I have never yet seen a student who is incapable of doing the tasks that I put forth before them and the class.
During class students are expected to participate regularly and complete in class assignments. I will be keeping track of students that ask questions and contribute to class discussions each week.
Students are expected to behave in a respectful manner that is conducive to the learning environment. Student issues are handled on a case by case basis.
Different students are at different levels and some students get topics better than others. If you feel like you are getting behind on the material, PLEASE come and see me so we can develop a plan of action to get a better understanding.
Absences:
If a student is absent they are responsible for making up the missing work/assessment and instruction. See me no more than two class days after the absence to help schedule a reasonable date that the missing work/assessment can be made up or the work/assessment will be deemed incomplete.
Homework (10%)
Written homework will be assigned. These assignments will be implemented to help student’s further practice on the course material. Homework will be graded for completion and effort. It does not have to be correct and is not graded for accuracy, however; weekly quizzes will be based on previous homework assignments. Students that do not take their homework corrections and practice seriously will not perform well when being assessed.
The day the assignment is due, students are expected to check their answers and formulate questions at the start of class while I go around to check that the assignment is complete.
**As the teacher, homework may be deemed incomplete if students are not showing sufficient work, or if students cannot explain their work for a given problem.
There may be times when there is not enough time to get to everyone’s questions, should this happen, you may want to write it down, so you do not forget and please see me later about it or email me.
Khan academy (25%) www.khanacademy.org is used in this course strictly as homework and classwork practice. I must reiterate that the instruction for this course is done by me in the classroom. This website also provide a great resource for the student who may be struggling with a topic because it provides hints and videos and it is aligned with common core standards. This is also a great resource for the student that would like to venture on further ahead at their own pace and on their own.
I can monitor and record how much work a student is actively engaged on this website. Usually when substitutes are needed or there is a day for classwork is given students are expected to put in a reasonable amount of time and activity on to the website skills otherwise students may receive a zero for that day.
These assignments will be well balanced with the homework and completion of these tasks will also count as a homework grade as completion of the assignment. (ex: 2 skills are assigned and a student gets a 80% on one skill and does not do the other. The student will get a 100% for HW completion with an 80% for the Khan grade, but a zero for HW completion and zero Khan until the Khan is made up.) Once a Khan is made up the zero will stay for the HW part as a penalty, but the Khan grade will be replaced.
Students will have until the end of each semester to do better on any of the skills assigned but grades will not change unless a student emails me or let’s me know that they improved on a skill. Even if students score lower on a skill I will only take the highest.
Note: If a Khan is assigned for homework and you are not doing well, even with support from outside resources, PLEASE complete the assignment, even if it is a low grade and see me for help. If you are trying to get a 100 but keep getting one question wrong after several attempts, just come to me and often if a student can demonstrate the understanding for me I will be happy to change the grade in the book. The LAST thing I want is for a student to spend more than an hour for perfection or when they are struggling or striving for a better grade.
Extra Credit: I use Khan academy for my extra credit as well! Each respective class has their own mission and there is something called a mastery challenge. These show up after practicing a few skills or after a certain amount of time in a blue box. Each time you complete one of these a meter fills up the percentage of your mastery in the course. For every 20% complete I will tack on 1 point for the semester grade.
Quizzes (30%)
Usually Each Thursday there will be an assessment that counts towards 30% of the semester grade. These quizzes will be like the homework problems assigned and classwork that we do in class, so it is very important to check your work and seek help when needed. Corrections can be done for half credit back will be due the following Wednesday.
Unit tests/projects (20%)
Test and/or projects will be given throughout the course. Corrections can be done for half credit back. There will not be a test and quiz given in the same week.
Classwork/participation (15%)
This will usually include weekly exit tickets, bell work, and questions or comments done during class.
Typical class day structure:
1) Elaboration/HW check
At the start of class students are expected to get to quietly get to their desks and either start the work displayed on the board or check their answers to a previous assignment, while I take attendance and check student work.
2) Class discussion/lesson instruction
During this time questions about the previous assignments will be encouraged and after some time we will get into the days lesson or topic.
3) Class work
Students will be in groups and together will work on the in-class assignments or homework depending on the lesson.
4) Summary
Before the end of class students will summarize the findings of their work/investigation and homework may be assigned.
Class curriculum and websites:
Please note that if you are a student where access to the internet is limited, that it is the student’s responsibility to utilize time at school, or other locations that provide internet access to get the required work done.
